Results and achievements in 2008 - Forecasts for 2009

PROFLUID, the French pump, compressor and valve association reports growth in the activity of all its trades in 2008.

In 2008, valves accounted for a turnover of over 3 billion Euro, an increase of 5.8% over the previous year; in the case of pumps growth was in the order of 2.9% for a turnover of 2.4 billion Euro; sales achieved by compressor manufacturers reached 1.8 billion Euro, up 3%.

The three trades represented by PROFLUID regroup 186 companies with a workforce of close to 31,000 employees.

Growth was sustained thanks to exports, especially in compressor sales (85% of invoiced volumes, with an increase of over 6.8%) and to a lesser extent in pump sales (60% of volumes were exported, up 7.8%). With 52% of these volumes exported, valve sales abroad were slightly below the other two trades, while its export growth was also slower than that of the French market (4.3% vs. a 7.6% rise in domestic sales).

The economic prospects for 2009 have deteriorated significantly and a number of sectors are directly affected by the economic downturn:

Generally, sales to the construction market have been sustained during the first quarter but a downturn for the second quarter is anticipated;
Order books for industry and energy markets remain quite full, but project delays, and even cancellations are being recorded; maintenance operations are sometimes postponed or suspended;
The water cycle market in France is deteriorating and the investments scheduled within the framework of the recovery plan have not had repercussions on sales as yet; internationally, the market is supported by large infrastructure projects.

From one company to the next, situations differ greatly and industrialists are mobilizing to ensure a stronger presence with their customers and secure more export markets.

To help them in their task, PROFLUID sets up collective actions to support exports or reinforce their competitiveness. Thus, the “Purchasing” Club created in 2008 answers a need for a forum among Purchasing Managers to improve their performance and their strategy, analyse their tools and methods, while facilitating contacts with other partners (other associations, foreign trade missions, etc.).
In 2008, PROFLUID worked in close cooperation with the French Environment and Industry ministries towards the implementation of the 2005/32/EC European Directive on the Eco-Design of Energy-using-Products. The application of this directive to circulators pumps while complying with both an energy-saving objective and the economic and industrial constraints of European manufacturers has made it possible to reach a draft standard which was unanimously adopted last 27 March. From January 2013, a change in the technology and the scheduled disappearance of 93% of the circulators pumps currently marketed will in the long run lead to energy savings for Europe estimated at 23 TWh, equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emissions by 11 million tonnes.

PROFLUID is also involved in the talks on thermal standards (RT 2012) held within the context of the Grenelle Environment Round Table process to take into account the technological developments in variable speed circulators and thermostatic valves. There is an on-going consultation process with CETIM for the fine tuning of environmental and sanitary data sheets for construction products.

In addition, PROFLUID guides its members with regard to standards linked to health issues: implementation of REACH within companies and renewal of the Sanitary Compliance Certificates of products.

Finally, in 2008, the Law for the Modernisation of the Economy (LME) remained a rallying topic: together with FIM, PROFLUID reiterates its commitment and support for the application of the legislation on payment terms. PROFLUID has not signed any of the derogation agreements and their extension may not concern pumps, valves or compressors, whatever their distribution network. PROFLUID remains extremely vigilant and active to ensure that the law is implemented.
